Why hang on to your unlimited data plan?
Question. I’ve got an unlimited-broadband wireless plan, one that my carrier doesn’t offer anymore. How can I keep that?
Answer. If the concept of a meter running on your mobile bandwidth bugs you, your options to avoid that have shifted over the last few years.
ATT and Verizon Wireless each stopped selling unlimited-data plans to new subscribers in 2010 — while T-Mobile restored an unlimited option last summer and Sprint never stopped selling unmetered data.
If you’ve been clinging to an ATT unlimited plan since 2010, you were able to relax your grip a little bit last year. The carrier relented on its policy of throttling back the connections of subscribers whose data use put them among the top 5 percent of users in a given market. Now, downloads won’t slow

Try these alternative keyboard options for your smartphone
Question. I have a friend whose hands shake slightly from a childhood bout with scarlet fever. Would a smartphone with a physical keyboard be better than a virtual, onscreen one?
Answer. This person would need to try out a bunch of different keyboards in person to know for sure, but I think we can rule out phones with physical keyboards upfront.
Those have become hard to find — of the 31 smartphones Verizon Wireless lists online, only six include physical keyboards, and even a company as fond of that concept as BlackBerry went with an onscreen keyboard on its new Z10 phone. And I wouldn’t recommend a physical keyboard in this case anyway.
“Real” keys can’t take advantage of many of the clever tricks you can play with the virtual kind to allow for more accurate input.

Verizon earnings rise on wireless, broadband growth
Verizon Communications said Thursday its net income increased 15.8% to $1.95 billion in the first quarter as the telecom giant added more wireless subscribers while its FiOS pay-TV and broadband business also continues to grow.
Its earnings per share of 68 cents – 15.3% higher than 59 cents in the year-earlier period – beat analysts’ estimate of 66 cents. Total operating revenue rose 4.2% to $29.4 billion.
“Verizon is off to an excellent start in 2013,” said Lowell McAdam, Verizon chairman and CEO. “Our strategic investments in wireless, wireline and global networks have given us the platforms to sustain momentum and take advantage of growth opportunities in key markets for broadband, video and cloud services.”
With more customers drawn to its enhanced wireless network called 4G LTE, revenue for Verizon Wireless,

Verizon urged to nix contracts

(CNN) — A movement urging Verizon to get rid of wireless contracts appears to be gaining steam.
A petition calling for the carrier to end contracts for smartphones and “create an affordable way for consumers to purchase their devices” had attracted more than 60,000 signatures by Wednesday morning on Change.org, the online petition platform.
Mike Beauchamp, a Verizon customer and blogger from Wichita, Kansas, said he started the Change.org petition 11 days ago after he heard Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam say he’d consider killing cell phone contracts if consumers asked for it.
“I believe that people should have the freedom of choice … to move freely between carriers,” Beauchamp told CNN in a phone interview. “I think that model where you tie customers in
