10 fun Tumblr blogs to follow

There's something addictive about looking at, and in some cases loathing, what rich kids decide to share on Instagram.

(CNN) — Sure, serious-minded folks from the White House on down have taken to Tumblr, the popular blogging platform that Yahoo announced it had purchased this week.

When you host 105 million blogs, you’re bound to have all types. But since hitting the Web in 2007, the blogs that have emerged as hits on Tumblr have tended to be silly, snarky or both.

Yahoo’s Tumblr purchase fraught with challenges

SAN FRANCISCO — Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer says her company’s $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr could be a game changer. But some question whether Yahoo is game for the hip upstart.

“This is incredibly important,” Mayer said in a phone interview before a press conference in New York Monday. “Our (mergers and acquisition) was around acquiring talent. This is as much strategic, enhancing growth and getting amazing content.”

Yahoo confirms $1.1 billion Tumblr purchase

SAN FRANCISCO —Yahoo is buying online blogging forum Tumblr for $1.1 billion as CEO Marissa Mayer tries to rejuvenate an Internet icon that had fallen behind the times.

The deal announced Monday represents Mayer’s boldest move yet since she left Google 10 months ago to lead Yahoo’s latest comeback attempt. It marks Yahoo’s most expensive acquisition since the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company bought online search engine Overture a decade ago for $1.3 billion in cash and stock.

Yahoo is paying all cash for Tumblr, dipping into some of its remaining stash from a $7.6 billion windfall reaped last year from selling about half of its stake in Chinese Internet company Alibaba Holdings. Taking over Tumblr will devour about 20% of the $5.4 billion in cash that Yahoo had in

EARLIER: Tumblr rumors swirled ahead of Monday event

On Friday Yahoo announced a press event for Monday in New York, where Tumblr is based.

Yahoo has been on an acquisition streak under CEO Marissa Mayer as part of the company’s efforts to reach a younger, more mobile audience.

Image-intensive social media platform Tumblr — popular among a younger crowd — would align with that strategy.

Analysis: Reported Tumblr deal a bold move for Yahoo

SAN FRANCISCO – When Marissa Mayer took the top job at long-suffering Internet giant Yahoo nearly a year ago, most wondered why.

Now, with its apparent $1 billion purchase of Tumblr, the latest of several savvy acquisitions, Mayer has put the yippee back into Yahoo. And investors are loving it.

The company, which has languished in the shadow of Google and Facebook in the Internet pecking order, is relevant once again in Silicon Valley.

Mayer said as much in a brief chat with USA TODAY on Friday night. Yahoo is accumulating “delightful” technology and world class talent, she said, to make it an essential destination for consumers – particularly those who are younger.
