New BlackBerry to be released in U.S. in mid-March

TORONTO (AP) — The chief executive of Research In Motion said he’s disappointed the new BlackBerry won’t be released in the United States until mid-March, but he said early data suggests sales in the U.K. are above expectations.

Thorsten Heins said in an interview Monday with The Associated Press that he was disappointed in the mid-March U.S. release date. But he said the U.S. and its phone carriers have a rigid testing system.

“We need to respect that. Am I a bit disappointed? Yeah, I would be lying saying no. But it is what it is and we’re working with all our carrier partners to speed it up as much as we can,” Heins said in an interview at the Ritz Carlton in Toronto.

Apparently This Matters: Puppy room

Stressed out at college? Puppies. Out of salsa? Puppies. See? All better.

Editor’s note: Each week in “Apparently This Matters,” CNN’s Jarrett Bellini applies his warped sensibilities to trending topics in social media and random items of interest on the Internet.

(CNN) — If you do a Google image search right now for “cute furry animals,” you’ll immediately find yourself in a fantastic world of kittens and hamsters and ducks and raccoons. And, oddly enough, if you scroll down a bit, there’s even a bizarre Photoshopped image of Tom Hanks. It’s his head on a bird’s body.

The Internet. Just like Al Gore intended.

Of course, as expected, you’ll also find more than enough puppies to choke a horse. (Though, that does seem a rather strange and unethical metaphor. But, nevertheless, if gagging a thoroughbred is

There were tablets before the iPad, but Apple’s tab introduced the concept to millions who had never heard of one. More than 84 million have been sold, dwarfing the competition. With its high-definition “retina display” screen, dual cameras and exensive app catalogue, it’s the standard by which other tablets are measured.

With the Kindle Fire, Amazon made a small dent in the iPad’s dominance by going smaller and cheaper, with a $199 price tag for the 7-inch tablet. The second-generation HD adds a camera and high-resolution screen, and includes a bigger 8.9-inch model for an extra $100. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said the goal isn’t to win by going cheap, but to make “the best tablet at any price.” Most critics say they’re not there yet, but celebrate the competition.

Game on, eh? 4 upcoming video games from Canada

Canada might be best known for these varied exports, but there’s one more major one from our neighbors to the north: video games.

Many of the world’s critically acclaimed and commercially successful video games have been designed and developed north of the 49th parallel, including the Mass Effect role-playing game series, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and of course, NHL hockey games.

For a taste of what’s to come, the following are just a few Canuck-made console and PC titles set to debut sometime this year and beyond.

FIFA 13

As you’d expect from EA Sports in Burnaby, B.C. this next-generation soccer simulation boasts gorgeous and intense “footy” action on the pitch compared to its predecessors — thanks, in part, to high-definition player models, lifelike animation and authentic ball and player physics. Due out this month, FIFA
