Apple’s App Store passes 50 billion downloads

Apple topped 50 billion downloads in its App Store earlier today.

Brandon Ashmore from Mentor, Ohio, downloaded the 50 billionth app, Say the Same Thing by Space Inch LLC. Apple awarded him a $10,000 App Store Gift Card.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said in a press release that the company is “absolutely floored” to pass this milestone.

“The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers,” Cue said.

Customers download over 800 apps per second from the App Store at a rate of two billion apps per month.

‘Angry Birds’ maker to publish third-party games

Angry Birds creator Rovio is launching a new label aimed at publishing mobile games from third-party developers.

The Rovio Stars label marks the first time the Finland-based mobile game studio will publish titles from outside developers. The company’s lineup of hits such as Angry Birds and Angry Birds Star Wars were internally developed.

“We want to help our fans find quality entertainment among the more than 100,000 games available in app stores,” says Jami Laes, Rovio’s executive vice president of games, in a statement. “That’s where Rovio Stars comes in.”

The first game that will be published under Rovio Stars is Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage, where players use icebreaking skills to assist a viking. The next game, Tiny Thief, in a stealth-based puzzle game featuring set in medieval times.

Owners of Apple’s iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch appear to be huge fans of downloadable games.

As Apple approaches 50 billion downloads on its App Store, the company has revealed the top 25 paid and free apps for the iPad and iPhone, with games taking over several spots.

On iPad, 15 of the 25 most downloaded apps ever are games, including five of the top six. On the free apps list, seven are games.

The category’s representation on iPhone is even stronger. According to Apple, 21 of the top 25 paid apps are games (we count Pocket God and The Moron Test, which are still games even though they fall in the Entertainment category). On the free side, six are games.
