(CNN) — During election season, phones across the country ring with more unsolicited, automated calls than usual. So it’s especially timely that on Thursday the U.S. Federal Trade Commission held a Robocall Summit to “explore innovations designed to trace robocalls, prevent wrongdoers from faking caller ID data, and stop unwanted calls.”
A “robocall” is an automated phone call that plays a prerecorded message. If you hear a live person and it’s a telemarketing, advocacy, or survey call, it could still be illegal if it’s unsolicited, but it’s not a robocall.

(CNN) — Mobile technology is critical at the airport.
Yet, a new survey shows that most travelers (58%) are not satisfied with airport Wi-Fi. And beyond that, airports are missing opportunities to offer vital mobile services that could vastly improve travelers’ experiences while they’re in transit.
This 2,700-person survey was conducted earlier this year by FlightView, which makes a popular app that provides flight and airport information. The survey shows mobile devices frequently accompany travelers: Four out of five airport travelers use a smartphone, one-third use tablets and one-fifth use e-readers.
Surprisingly, fewer than one in five travelers reported using a laptop computer at the airport. FlightView

(CNN) — The long-running rumor that Apple might release a smaller, less costly version of the iPad is building. There’s widespread speculation that Apple might announce this device as early as October 17 — just in time for the holiday-buying season.
If the fabled iPad Mini exists (Apple, as is its custom with new products, steadfastly refuses to confirm this), what might make this device worth buying?
Apple founder Steve Jobs might be rolling in his grave about this notable departure from his design vision. In 2010 Jobs famously dismissed the 7-inch tablet, saying in an Apple earnings call: “It’s meaningless unless your tablet also includes sandpaper, so that the

Survey: Conservatives own fewer smartphones

(CNN) — Nearly nine out of 10 registered U.S. voters own a cell phone — almost half of which are smartphones. And many voters are using cell phones to get and share election information or news.
By and large, however, they’re not using their phones to connect directly with candidates, parties or interest groups, according to a new report by the Pew Internet American Life Project.
In September, Pew surveyed more than 1,000 U.S. adults and found that — even though text messaging is generally the most popular thing people do with their phones (other than talking) — texting doesn’t appear to be hugely popular in relation to this
