Google to merge user data across its services

(CNN) — Google plans to start combining information the company collects about each user of its various websites and services into a single profile, the company announced on Tuesday.
Previously, Google said it did not create comprehensive profiles across its various properties, including its leading search engine, Android smartphone operating system and YouTube video site.
In a statement, Alma Whitten, a Google privacy director, wrote that the changes “will mean a simpler, more intuitive Google experience.” She added, “Our recently launched personal search feature is a good example of the cool things Google can do when we combine information across products.”
That change, called Google Search Plus Your World, brought criticism from rivals Facebook and Twitter, which said that Google+ content now buries their own

The idea for “1999 Mode” started with a survey conducted by studio Irrational Games, which features key designers behind hit action games System Shock 2 and BioShock.
Gardener says the team at Irrational felt BioShock — considered one of 2007′s best games by critics — was missing something compared with the 1999 PC classic System Shock 2.
After reaching out to video game players, they arrived at an answer: impactful player decisions.
“There wasn’t enough permanence, there wasn’t enough gravity, if you will,” Gardener says of the

Google and Facebook extend snooping
Google’s controversial new privacy policy covers familiar territory for Peter Eckersley, the Electronic Frontier Foundatation’s respected Technology Projects Director.
He says the search giant’s disclosure that it will track what you do across all Google-owned services that you partake of — on your PC and mobile devices — comes across more like a confession than a bold new move.
“It has always been the case that Google kept effectively linkable records of our uses of Gmail, Search, Maps and Market for Android, and other services,” says Eckersley. “Only very sophisticated users have ever been able to remove any of that linkability, and that remains the case today.
“In a couple of cases, Google had some internal practices of not linking your browsing history, and YouTube history, to other data — and those internal walls at the company are now gone.”
One of Eckersley’s friends was under the impression that because
